The Sir John Monash Centre receives the French “Tourism & Handicap” label

News

Posted on 12 August 2026

The Sir John Monash Centre continues its commitment to improving accessibility for all by obtaining the “Tourisme & Handicap” label for people who are blind or have low vision. This recognition completes the “Tourisme & Handicap” certification already awarded in December 2024 for visitors with intellectual disabilities, reduced mobility and people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

The Tourisme & Handicap label is awarded by the French Government to tourism sites that are committed to providing an accessible and high-quality experience for all visitors.

During the design phase, the architects ensured that the Sir John Monash Centre was fully accessible by incorporating lifts and ramps, locating the entire exhibition on a single level and installing automatic doors.

The visitor experience was also designed to be accessible as possible through the SJMC app, which provides an accessible interface and subtitles for the Centre’s multimedia content.

The final category of the “Tourisme & Handicap” certification was accessibility for visitors who are blind or have low vision. This was awarded in August 2026 following the implementation of appropriate accessibility features throughout the site.

The Sir John Monash Centre is now recognised across all four categories covered by the certification: people with intellectual disability, people with reduced mobility, people who are deaf or hard of hearing and people who are blind or have low vision.

Staff at the Sir John Monash Centre are trained and committed to ensuring that the Centre is accessible to all visitors.
