Springtime in the Cemeteries – Art Deco at the Heart of Remembrance
Springtime in the Cemeteries is an annual event that invites visitors to discover sites of remembrance as spaces of heritage, art, and storytelling. This year the Sir John Monash Centre welcomes Carole Laevens, a tour guide specialising in the First World War, for a presentation on an emblematic monument: the Australian National Memorial near Villers-Bretonneux, with a focus on its place within Art Deco aesthetics.
When we think of a military cemetery or a war memorial, our first thoughts are usually of reflection, silence, and solemnity. Yet these sites are also architectural and artistic works, designed to speak to future generations. At Villers-Bretonneux, that message is conveyed through the distinctive language of Art Deco.
Carole Laevens will welcome you to this lecture-tour on Sunday, 10 May at 3pm at the Sir John Monash Centre, in the Patrick Simon AO Room.

European Long Night of Museums – Yaluu (See You Again) screening
The Aboriginal peoples of Australia believe that the spirit finds peace only when it rests on its traditional land.
Yaluu (See You Again) is a 27-minute documentary that follows Peter Milliken on a journey to uncover the story of his great-granduncle, Pte. William Allen Irwin DCM, an Aboriginal soldier who served on the Western Front during the First World War. .
In 2025, Peter travelled to France to trace his ancestor’s footsteps, visiting battlefields, cemeteries and museums, and bringing back soil from William’s grave to Gomeroi land so that his spirit might return to his homeland and rest in peace.
The film highlights the bravery of Aboriginal soldiers and the deep connection families maintain with ancestors buried far from their traditional lands.
For the European Long Night of Museums, the Sir John Monash Centre invites you to a free screening of Yaluu on Saturday, 23 May 2026, at 6pm, with screenings on a loop every hour, the final showing at 9pm.
The SJMC café will serve a selection of hamburgers and chips (pre-ordering required). Click here to see the menu and order your meal.
