Temporary Exhibition at the Sir John Monash Centre

The road to Armageddon : How the Western Front developed 1914-1915

In 1915, trench warfare defined the Western Front as the conflict settled into a brutal stalemate. Soldiers endured some of the harshest living conditions imaginable, making it even more devastating with the first large-scale use of poison gas.

The Sir John Monash Centre’s new exhibition explores this pivotal year of the First World War. Visitors will have the chance to engage directly with history, with helmets and gas masks available to handle — and even try on — for a unique hands-on experience.

The exhibition will be open from 19 September 2025 through to February 2026.

Conference : New Zealand Liberation Museum – Te Arawhata

The Sir John Monash Centre and the New Zealand Liberation Museum – Te Arawhata of Le Quesnoy invite you to join us as we delve into the story of  New Zealand on the Western Front.

Following the ANZACs’ strategic withdrawal from Gallipoli, the New Zealand Division was formed and sent to endure the trials and terrors of the Somme and Flanders before playing a key role in the Hundred Days Offensive.

Concluding with the famous battle at Le Quesnoy, which today is home to Te Arawhata, discover how this journey forged a national identity and marked the start of a friendship spanning the globe.
