Anzac Day Bullecourt Digger Service, France

Bullecourt is located in the Pas-de-Calais department of northern France. This small town was the theatre of two battles involving troops of the Australian Imperial Force.
In 1917, weakened by battles like Verdun and the Somme the previous year, the German Army withdrew to a new, fortified position stretching almost 160 km between the towns of Lens to Soissons. The Allies followed the German Army as it consolidated into this heavily fortified line, known as the Hindenburg Line after General Paul von Hindenburg. The sector of Bullecourt quickly became the scene of intense fighting, involving troops of the 5th British Army and of the 4th Australian Division.
Each year on Anzac Day in honour of the troops that fought here, the town of Bullecourt and the Australian Government pay tribute to Australia’s servicemen and women that have served since the First World War.
